Promising transfer news for Celtic as Rodgers eyes much-needed swoop in January

The Celtic fans here in the Transfer Tavern are slightly daunted by the fate of their Europa League draw after Zenit St Petersburg came up as their next European opponents. As you can imagine, not too many of our punters clad in green and white are too optimistic.

However, at least reports from the Daily Mail in yesterday’s LIVE transfer centre (14:43) suggest at some transfer activity before now and then. Indeed, they claim the Hoops are considering a move for RB Leipzig defender Marvin Compper as Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen in central defence.

It’s proven to be a problem position of late and the Bhoys in our bar would be delighted by the signing of the experience 32-year-old. The German was a regular for the Bundesliga last season and only lost his place to the excellent Dayot Upamecano, so would be quite the coup for the Scottish champions.

If Celtic are going to make an impact in the Europa League, these are the kind of signings they need to make.

Landlord’s Verdict:

With injuries to Dedryck Boyata, Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko, Celtic certainly could do an experienced central defender at long last. They’ve been crying out for one for months now and someone to hold the backline together on tough European nights could have a calming impact on the rest of the squad.
