Recent admission should prompt Celtic into making summer move for £6.75m-rated wing wizard

Celtic supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side all but retain their Scottish Premiership crown after edging past Old Firm rivals Rangers 3-2 in a thrilling contest at Ibrox on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’ men went into their encounter with the Gers only six points ahead of Graeme Murty’s side in the table, and knowing that victory for the Light Blues would keep the title-race very much alive heading into the run in. And while Rangers twice went ahead through Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias, it was the Bhoys who secured the vital three points as goals from Tom Rogic, Moussa Dembele, and Odsonne Edouard sealed the victory for the defending champions, in turn moving them nine points clear at the summit, and still with a game in hand over their bitter rivals.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted Celtic fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their side can take another step closer to defending their crown by beating Motherwell on Sunday.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Bhoys supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent comments from winger Patrick Roberts that he’d ‘love’ to remain at the club beyond the summer.

As such, this recent admission should convince Rodgers’ side to go after the £6.75 million-rated man (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, as his form last year and future prospects at Manchester City make him the ideal addition to take Celtic up another level in the seasons to come.

Ultimately, the 21-year-old played a huge part in helping the Bhoys win the domestic treble last season, bagging an impressive 11 goals and laying on 16 assists to help Celtic further underline their dominance of football north of the border.

Add in his six goals in just 11 appearances in the 2015/16 season when he first made the move to Parkhead in January 2016, and Roberts has produced some of his best football in Glasgow, and has thus began to fulfil his undoubted potential in the green and white of Celtic.

Yes, the former England youth international has struggled with injury this term, to the point that he has only made six Scottish Premiership appearances, but he did manage to lay on three assists in his opening two appearances of the campaign to once again suggest that he is a hugely influential player for Rodgers’ side, and one that can seriously benefit them going forward.

Importantly though, it’s difficult to see how he would fit in at Man City were he to go back there in the summer.

Pep Guardiola’s men are storming towards the Premier League title and are very much a contender for the Champions League, and that success ultimately brings difficulties for young players breaking through into the side – Phil Foden is a supremely talented youngster as well, but he has made just three senior starts for the Citizens this term.

Thus, Roberts would certainly be better off, from a development point of view, making the move to Celtic – he’d get regular gametime, experience of European football, and the chance to continue helping Rodgers’ side break records and win major honours.

And with the man himself reportedly open to staying, Celtic must ask the question and thus go after the 21-year-old wing wizard this summer.
