For the Celtic fans here in the Transfer Tavern, it really couldn’t have been a much better weekend. Not only did Brendan Rodgers’ men ensure a League Cup final berth themselves, Rangers were knocked out by Motherwell.
Indeed, the Bhoys in our bar needed a positive week after their 0-3 trouncing away at Bayern Munich in the Champions League, so life is getting better amongst the punters clad in green and white. With that in mind, a positive transfer report from the Scottish Sun has only heightened the good mood amongst them.
According to the Sun, Brendan Rodgers is keen on a move for a new central defender. Following an injury to Jozo Simunovic, the club’s lack of options in a central defensive area was all too apparent over in Bavaria, so the idea of seeing a new man arrive is a popular one.
“It’s definitely an area I need to look at now, centre-half is a position where you need stability”, said Rodgers.
“It’s been unfortunate for us we haven’t had that.
“It hasn’t just been one player who’s been affected, it’s been two and sometimes three at a time who have been out.
“It’s unfortunate, but we have to make do, and we’ll see what January brings.
Erik Sviatchenko and Dedryck Boyata have also suffered injury problems this season, forcing Nir Bitton back into a defensive role, so it’s clear that the area needs strengthening.
If Celtic can land a top-drawer central defender in January, it’d give the whole club a boost. Should they be involved in the Europa League in the latter stages, a big signing could completely change the feeling at the club.
