Rodgers praises ‘incredible’ midfielder amid Celtic rumours

As quoted by The Mirror, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has refused to be drawn on the speculation linking his club Celtic to former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, with our resident Bhoys here in the Transfer Tavern hoping silence is golden.

The Liverpool legend has announced he is leaving LA Galaxy after spending just under two years in the MLS and many are wondering what his future could now hold, with a move to Parkhead being linked.

Whether he remains playing, begins coaching or does some TV work are the main options being discussed but his former boss, now at Celtic Park, would not disclose whether or not he was considering an offer for the Champions League winner.

Instead, the Ulsterman spoke in glowing terms about the midfielder.

“I never speculate or speak about players coming into the club. I never have done and don’t intend to start now – that will always remain private”, said the former Reds coach.

”The only thing I would say with regards to Steven, he has been an incredible player. I had him for a number of years at Liverpool and he was absolutely brilliant with me.

”As a young manager going into such a great club, having the captain and real senior player there, to be able to work closely together with him and learn about the club and work together on the field was fantastic.”

Gerrard worked with Rodgers between 2012 and 2015 during which time they almost won the Premier League title and returned the club to Champions League football in the process in the 2013/14.

They did, however, from there endure tougher times with the Reds losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona and Gerrard announcing his departure for the end of the 2014/15 season.

Rodgers then saw himself leave Anfield in October of 2015, to be replaced by current manager Jurgen Klopp.
