Rodgers should seek to lure Leicester City’s Eldin Jakupovic to Celtic

Celtic supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been somewhat quieter in recent times after seeing their side embark upon a testing start to the 2018/19 season.

Brendan Rodgers’ men came into the new campaign off the back of securing back-to-back domestic trebles last time round, and thus seeking to maintain their domination of Scottish football by doing the same again this term. Yet they haven’t made a great start in winning one and losing the other of their two Scottish Premiership matches, while the Bhoys also exited the Champions League earlier this month after losing 3-2 on aggregate to AEK Athens in the third qualifying round.

As such, there have been many despondent Celtic fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are wondering whether manager Rodgers will be able to bring in a few more additions to bolster his squad ahead of the rest of the season.

And one man they should seek to lure to Parkhead is £900,000-rated Premier League goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic (as per Transfermarkt), in a move which would finally give Celtic number one Craig Gordon something to think about.

Ultimately, while 35-year-old Gordon has been a stalwart between the sticks for the Scottish giants since his move there back in 2014, the Scotland international hasn’t always convinced of his capabilities, and was criticised at times last season for his efforts between the sticks.

And at the age of 35, one wonders how much longer the former Sunderland shot-stopper has at the top level in Scotland, yet with only Scott Bain as the alternative in Rodgers’ squad, it appears that Gordon will keep hold of the number one jersey for a while yet.

But sealing a deal for Leicester City’s Jakupovic would indeed give the 35-year-old something to think about, as the Foxes shot-stopper has certainly proven his credentials in the Premier League in recent years.

The 33-year-old made the move to the King Power Stadium back in 2017 after impressing at Hull City the season before, with the goalkeeper keeping five clean sheets and conceding 36 goals in 22 Premier League games for the Tigers, although he was unable to keep them in the top-flight.

Nonetheless, Jakupovic certainly produced the goods that term under Marco Silva to suggest that he is a hugely adept goalkeeper at top-flight level – there’s a reason Leicester sought to bring him to the Midlands last summer.

But having landed Danny Ward from Liverpool during the recent close season, Jakupovic looks set to be third-choice under Claude Puel this term, and while third-choice in other positions on the pitch maybe isn’t too bad, it is if one is the third-choice goalkeeper.

As such, he could well be available to leave Leicester this term, and Celtic must seek to ask the question in a bid to give current number one Gordon something to think about regarding his place in Rodgers’ team.
