Talks to commence as Rodgers opens up on potential Celtic deal

It’ll be extremely hard to improve on last season for the Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern, who watched Brendan Rodgers deliver a historic treble in his first campaign at the helm.

Indeed, just how the Bhoys strengthen is up for debate, having dominated domestically, though reports from the Daily Record have gone down well in that regard today.

They claim Rodgers is ready to reopen contract talks with star man Stuart Armstrong about the notion of extending his stay at Parkhead beyond the course of his current deal. The Scotland international was one of the success stories of last term, proving a stalwart of their success in a central midfield berth.

Out of contract in a year’s time, the midfielder has been touted as a potential target for Premier League new boys Brighton and Hove Albion, though the Scottish champions are reportedly eager to get his future secured as soon as possible.

Talks are understood to have been put on hold as they focused on the end to a historic campaign, though Rodgers has revealed they are now one of the primary orders of business this summer.

“I wanted to put talks on the back burner towards the end of last season. I didn’t want distractions and there was a period when it wasn’t resolved”, he said.

“The last thing Stuart needed to worry about was talks. He’s had the Scotland game and a holiday so I’m sure they will resume over the course of the season.

“Stuart had a brilliant year. Contracts are always about length of time or finances but I’m confident the club and the agent will come to an agreement.

“He’s happy here and knows he is improving. So let’s wait and see.”
