Over the last few years, it’s been hard for Rangers to break out from Celtic’s shadow. Having fought their way back to the Scottish top flight, they have, as of yet, been unable to bag another famous title win. Indeed, Celtic have had little competition over the last few years – but could that all change this season?
At present, the Scottish top flight is looking uncharacteristically tight.
Celtic are sat low down in 6th place, whilst Hearts are leading the charge on 16 points. Just behind them are Rangers, who sit on 11 points having won 3 of their games so far this season.
By this point in any other season, Celtic have normally put down a marker for their intentions for the campaign again, with, more often than not, the Scottish outfit leading the way in the SPFL. This year, though, that’s not the case. They’re already six points off the top of the table, and so could the door be slightly ajar for someone else to take their crown?
Well, for Steven Gerrard, this is an opportunity that could go one way or the other.
With Celtic struggling at present, that would, in theory, open the door for Rangers to make a charge for the title. If that were to happen, Gerrard would rightfully be a popular man, and the decision to take a punt on him would be lauded as a masterstroke.
But what if it goes in another direction?
Sure, the rewards for a successful season could be massive for Gerrard, but they could also very easily turn sour. Losing the title to Celtic is one thing, and many Rangers fans would be unhappy at that prospect, but losing the title to Hearts? That could be even more problematic for Gerrard. That’s not to say that the rivalry between Rangers and Hearts is on a par with the Old Firm, not in the slightest, but for Gerrard, that shouldn’t be a consideration.
Rather, if Celtic continue how they are going at the moment, the Englishman is never going to have a better chance to make an impact. With all the problems going on at Celtic, it’s hard to see them not changing things at the next available opportunity with a few new signings, but right now the ball is in Rangers’ court.
If they let this opportunity go, and make no mistake, this is a significant opportunity, then that may be something that Gerrard is unable to recover from. Hearts are on track to win the title at present, and that could lead to Rangers’ worst failing in years.
