Brendan Rodgers has not been overly active in the transfer market so far this summer, but a recent report from CityWatch suggests that Celtic are on the verge of welcoming an Australian wonderkid to the club in a season-long loan deal.
According to the report, Daniel Arzani has flown to Europe from Australia ahead of a £280,000 transfer to Manchester City after impressing at Melbourne City in the Australian top-flight. The same report claims that the 19-year-old will then immediately embark on a loan move to Celtic.
The 19-year-old has been attracting plenty of interest in Australia for his performances at club level, and his quality on the ball has caused fans and pundits to draw comparisons with the former Socceroo Harry Kewell.
Arzani’s performances at club level earned him a call-up to the Australia World Cup squad in Russia this year where he made 3 appearances off the substitutes bench.
What was perhaps most striking about Arzani during his World Cup campaign was his lack of physical presence, as defenders found it relatively simple to dispossess him by using their strength.
Technically, Arzani looks composed and full of quality when driving forward with the ball at his feet, but his lack of experience and physical shortcomings could ultimately count against him in the Scottish Premiership.
And with only 2 goals and 3 assists to show for his efforts in the A-League last season, Arzani is not arriving on the back of a glowing campaign in which he tore the division apart, far from it in fact.
It’s certainly too early to write off Arzani ahead of his proposed move to Celtic, but the supporters should not expect immediate fireworks from a youngster who still has plenty of improving to do before he can hold down a regular starting berth in Brendan Rodgers’ side.
