Rangers’ season so far has, generally speaking, been pretty good. They’vee had their poor moments, but for the most part, Steven Gerrard has made a good start to life in professional management, and that bodes well for the future.
But is an opportunity coming in the present, too?
Celtic’s poor form in Scotland is intriguing for Rangers, as it could open the door for a somewhat unexpected title challenge. Whilst Rangers are always expected to give it a go, most fans likely wouldn’t have expected a title-winning campaign during Gerrard’s first season – but if things go well, they certainly have a chance.
If Rangers can open a gap between them and Celtic, anything could happen between now and the end of the season.
However, Gerrard will need a few of his players to improve to have any chance of maintaining a title challenge – as a few players are currently letting him down.
With that said, these 2 Rangers players must improve to help title charge…
Umar Sadiq’s campaign, or lack thereof, has been well documented this season.
The forward hasn’t started a single game this team, and that’s with good reason. Whenever he has featured, he has looked poor, and it doesn’t appear as though Steven Gerrard is particularly eager to give him a chance anytime soon.
He recently told the forward to “come to the party”, insinuating that a lack of effort, quality and determination were on display in training from the Nigerian.
He’s clearly a good player – his goalscoring record last season proved that – but he hasn’t cut it thus far. He’ll get opportunities if he shows he deserves them.
There’s no doubting Alfredo Morelos’ goalscoring pedigree. He bagged 14 league goals last season and has already secured 2 more this term. He’s clearly one of Steven Gerrards most important players.
However, that makes the issues surrounding the forward all the more prevalent.
His disciplinary record is quickly becoming a major issue for Rangers, and this term has been his worst yet. With 4 yellows and 1 red already in all competitions, he’s not a player that Gerrard is able to reliably call on weekly, given that he could be unavailable at any moment due to suspension.
Not to mention, when he is on the field, he’s often inconsistent. He didn’t score a single goal for over a month after his hattrick against Kilmarnock in the Sottish League Cup.
Morelos, then, has a lot of work to do. He needs to be more potent more regularly, and he needs to be more concerned with his discipline.
