Forget Mbemba: Celtic must be ambitious and launch move for £13.5m-rated lynchpin

Celtic fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited to see who the club will sign now the summer window is officially open after wrapping up the Scottish domestic double.

Brendan Rodgers guided the Hoops to their seventh consecutive league title earlier in the season and made it back-to-back Scottish Cup victories with a 2-0 win over Motherwell at Hampden Park. However, Celtic struggled on the European stage being knocked out of both the Champions League and Europa League. So, there is certainly plenty of work to do if they are to retain their title next season.

With that in mind, the defence will be an area that Rodgers will look to strengthen with a lack of quality at centre-back and no backup option for Kieran Tierney who has been linked with an exit. The Hoops have been linked with a move for Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba who the Magpies would be willing to sell. Instead, they should try to sign Chelsea centre-back – Kurt Zouma.

The Frenchman spent last season on loan at Stoke City where he made 32 appearances for the Potters who were relegated from the Premier League. Despite their relegation, he had the highest average rating in the Stoke squad according to WhoScored. Zouma is primarily a centre-back but can also be used at right-back, adding more cover to key positions. He is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt and is unlikely to break into the first-team at Stamford Bridge.

An extremely physical defender, the former St Etienne man would be an excellent signing for the Hoops. Still only 23-years-old, Zouma has plenty of time to realise his potential and move to the SPL could be the right move to kickstart his career.
