Steven Gerrard could be about to complete his 15th summer signing following their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic.
The veteran defender is available on a free transfer following his decision to leave West Bromwich Albion at the end of the season after they were relegated from the Premier League.
And, it appears that he is ready to join his boyhood club on a deal that is thought to be until the end of the season.
The 38-year-old is currently with the Northern Ireland squad for their UEFA Nations League fixture with Bosnia and Herzegovina and a friendly with Israel.
The central defender will become the fourth to be added to the Rangers squad by Gerrard this summer, with Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson and Joe Worrall having all arrived as well.
McAuley would be a great addition to the Light Blues this summer as Gerrard completes the final piece to his jigsaw at Ibrox.
It is unlikely that the 38-year-old will be heavily involved on a matchday, with Katic and Goldson building a solid pairing already at the back, whilst Worrall is touted to have a bright future.
However, the Northern Irishman’s experience and knowledge will be invaluable to the squad and will hopefully help to take Rangers to the next level.
