Gerrard could land final piece of defensive jigsaw with unlikely deal for key club target

The Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club can continue to bring quality players to Ibrox in a bid to end Celtic’s dominance next season, but recent reports suggest they could fall short in their pursuit of one target.

The Breakdown

According to a recent report from the Daily Express, Rangers are interested in signing Millwall’s Jake Cooper next season, although Sky Sports believe that the Lions are not interested in selling their centre-back this summer. At the end of a season in which Cooper impressed defensively and managed to contribute in attack by providing 4 goals and 3 assists, it’s easy to understand why Gerrard has identified him as an ideal target.

With Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson and Jon Flanagan already added to the defensive unit this summer, Gerrard has laid the foundations of a solid back-four who should provide a perfect platform for Rangers to mount a title challenge next season.

But Rangers interest in Cooper suggests that Gerrard is not quite satisfied with his options just yet and believes further depth is required at centre-back to ensure his squad is well prepared for the new campaign.

With Bruno Alves widely expected to leave the club after just one season, it’s fair to say that Gerrard’s interest in Cooper is certainly justified.

Not only would the arrival of another centre-back give Gerrard a layer of depth which is needed throughout the course of the season, but it would also lend him the opportunity to experiment with his formation and explore the possibility of utilising a 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 formation.

There are bound to be teething problems in the coming months as Gerrard grapples with his first role as a senior manager and formation experiments are bound to be a feature of that, however, signing Millwall’s goal-hungry defender to replace the outgoing Alves will certainly aid his cause and hand him an ideal player to complete his defensive unit.
