Almost everything that Steven Gerrard has done this season has been popular with Rangers fans. The former midfielder has moved to Ibrox and immediately become a favourite. However, it’s not always going to be that way, and the Englishman – alongside the Rangers board – is going to have to make some tough decisions.
That’s certainly the case with regards to Alfredo Morelos. According to the Times, Steven Gerrard has revealed that the forward has an asking price, and so he could be sold if a club chooses to meet the demands of the Gers.
Of course, that doesn’t imply that a sale is close, nor does it remotely imply that someone will meet it – but it still opens up the prospect of the forward leaving.
Making the decision to lose him would make both Dave King and Gerrard unpopular, but you’ve got to consider all sides of this debate. Is there an argument, then, for his sale?
Now, make no mistake, Alfredo Morelos has been crucial to this team all season long. He’s bagged 12 league goals so far, and you could argue that he’s the best forward in Scotland. With excellent energy, determination and goalscoring acumen, he ticks a lot of boxes in pursuit of the ideal forward.
However, he does come with a lot of baggage. He’s picked up a handful of yellow cards and even a few red cards this season, and that means that he’s not always available for selection. It’s hard to be able to rely on a player if they’re unpredictable and you never know when their next moment of madness is going to come. He’s only ever a few games away from controversy, that’s for sure.
Furthermore, you only have to look at Jermain Defoe to find another reason to flog Morelos. The Englishman has come to the Gers and already opened his account for the club, with a goal against Kilmarnock, and the best is surely yet to come. If he’s able to come close to his English goalscoring record, he’ll give Morelos a real run for his money, and it’s fair to say that, on paper, Defoe could well end up being first choice for the rest of the season.
Given his current form, Morelos’ value has never been higher, and that’s reason enough to sell him as well. He’s come on leaps and bounds, but it’s hard to tell where that development will end. If he has a poor second-half of the season, in light of having more of a rotational role alongside Defoe, then there’s no doubting that his value would drop somewhat.
Should Rangers transfer list him and get rid of him immediately in light of Defoe’s arrival? Certainly not, they can play in the same team, and they could form a deadly partnership. However, if a major offer does come in, the Gers shouldn’t rule it out completely. For the first time in a while, they aren’t as heavily reliant on him for their source of goals, and though they’d be worse off without him, perhaps they’d be in a better position with £20+ million in their pockets.
