Gerrard’s Rangers rebuild would hit next level if he moved for £7.2m-rated World Cup winner

Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern can finally crack a smile after Steven Gerrard took over as manager and kickstarted their summer transfer plans.

The Gers secured the signature of Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield on a free transfer and also obtained a two-year deal for former keeper Allan McGregor who joins after rejecting a new contract at Hull. Gerrard also completed a permanent deal for Jamie Murphy from Brighton who impressed during his loan spell.

Our punters are glad to see the former Liverpool captain wasting no time improving his squad as he looks to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next year. To compete with the Hoops, Rangers need a 20-goal per season forward to fire them into title contention.

The answer could be Tottenham striker – Fernando Llorente. The Spaniard joined from Swansea last summer for £13m but has started just one Premier League game; playing second fiddle to Harry Kane. With game time limited, Llorente could be set for an exit.

Valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, the former Juventus forward would be an inspired piece of business by Rangers. He netted 15 goals during his final season for Swansea and is a World Cup winner with Spain. The Spaniard is a considerable threat in the air and would score goals for fun in the SPFL. It’s unlikely Tottenham would demand a hefty fee for his services meaning Rangers could scoop a bargain.

Whether Gerrard can beat former club Athletic Bilbao in the race for his signature remains to be seen.
