Former Rangers right-back Alan Hutton has claimed that any of the Glasgow club’s players could leave the club when the transfer window re-opens next month “if the price is right,” even if they are a star player, like Alfredo Morelos, or even club captain James Tavernier.
This comes after Gers boss Steven Gerrard recently claimed that none of his side’s “big players” will be leaving Ibrox next month, so it would seem as though Hutton believes that Gerrard may not have been entirely truthful with that statement, with the pundit claiming that all of his former club’s players could be up for grabs, in the case of a big offer being made.
Why would Gerrard rule out January departures?
It’s understandable why Gerrard is particularly keen to retain the services of his big players for the remainder of this season, with his side attempting to win the Premiership and prevent their Old Firm rivals Celtic from achieving a historic 10th straight Scottish top-flight title.
With Rangers sitting 16 points clear of second-placed Celtic, it may be fair to say that they’re currently on course to achieve this goal and so, its easy to see why Gerrard wants to ensure that his key, league-leading, squad members remain at Ibrox.
Do Rangers need to make more money from player sales?
On the other hand, it’s understandable why Hutton feels that any of Rangers’ players could leave the Glasgow club for the right price, given that their Old Firm rivals make far more profit from player sales than the Gers do, with Celtic offsetting their day to day losses via this revenue stream for the latest financial year.
Will Rangers sell a big name in January?
As a result, we feel that in the long run, Hutton’s view may be correct, however, knowing just how important the 2020/21 Premiership campaign is for Rangers, we feel that the Gers will surely wait until the summer to offload any key players. It will be interesting to see if that proves to be the case, with the transfer window set to re-open next month.
