Hibernian: Injury nightmare for Agyepong, but attitude is first class

Hibs had high hopes when Ghanaian winger Thomas Agyepong arrived at Easter Road on loan from Manchester City in the summer, and the player seemed excited about pulling on the green jersey.

It was a shame, therefore, when he suffered an injury just five games into his spell, and then to suffer a hamstring injury less than half an hour into his comeback.

The latter has prevented him from playing since, and it was a devastating blow for both the youngster and Hibs, who were both hoping to benefit from the deal.

Hibs boss, Paul Heckingbottom, who has not seen the winger in action, told the Edinburgh Evening News that both he, and the player, share frustration at the situation, but he hopes to get him “over that final hurdle” that will see him in action before the season ends.

“It’s been frustrating for Thomas and the club,” said Heckingbottom. “He has all the attributes, and I am sure if we get him right he can have an impact on the team.

“It’s just getting him over that final hurdle. Every time he has been ready to go that next stage [in his rehabilitation] he’s broken down. It’s been really hard for him.”

He also admitted the player to chose to stay in Edinburgh, when given the option to return to Manchester.

He said: “We left it up to Thomas. He wanted to stay and be around the rest of the boys.”

It is a real shame that such a promising player has suffered a nightmare injury, and it is testament to his character and commitment that he was adamant about staying in and around his new teammates, when he could have gone back to City, and put the season behind him.

It is the attitude of someone who wants to succeed, and exactly the type of player teammates, managers and fans alike, want to have at their football club.

When he regains full fitness, it would be no surprise, if Hibs try to secure his services again next season, which would hopefully give him the opportunity to repay the faith and patience the club and its fans have accorded him, and allow him to show them exactly what he can do.
