Celtic supporters have been somewhat subdued in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side throw away a two-goal lead to end up drawing 2-2 with Hibernian on Sunday, thus seeing their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership cut to five points.
Brendan Rodgers’ men went into their clash at Easter Road off the back of losing 1-0 to Anderlecht in the Champions League in midweek, although that loss wasn’t enough to deprive them of a place in the Europa League after Christmas. However, the Bhoys weren’t able to get back to winning ways despite opening up a two-goal lead over Hibs through a Scott Sinclair brace in the second half, with goals from Efe Ambrose and Oli Shaw securing a point for Neil Lennon’s side, on a weekend which saw Celtic’s nearest challengers Rangers and Aberdeen both win to reduce the gap at the summit to five points.
Consequently, there have been some downbeat Bhoys fans in the Tavern in recent times, although their mood may well be improved by a recent report from The Scottish Sun, which includes intriguing comments from Michael Stewart for BBC Sportscene regarding the future of Hibs star John McGinn.
The 23-year-old midfielder made the move to Easter Road back in 2015 and has since gone from strength to strength with 13 goals and 23 assists in 112 games for the club, four goals and four assists of which have come in his fine start to this season.
And Rodgers’ Celtic are reportedly interested in a move for the Scotland international, and former Hibs star Stewart reckons could happen if a few factors came into play, namely that of a player-plus-cash deal.
He said: ‘I think that sort of thing, or that type of deal has a good probability of happening – it would be appealing to Hibs.
‘However, I think the transfer fee would have to be higher. £2.5million plus Henderson? Then you start thinking.’
And these comments are sure to interest our resident Celtic fans, many of whom would have seen first-hand how good McGinn is given his great display against the Bhoys on Sunday.
Landlord’s verdict: John McGinn’s impressive effort in the heart of Hibernian’s midfield against Celtic on Sunday has received praise from many around the country, and further fuelled speculation that he could be on his way to Parkhead in coming transfer windows.
Brendan Rodgers’ side have been linked with a move for the talented 23-year-old in recent times, and former Hibs and Hearts star Michael Stewart reckons it’s a deal that could well take place, especially were the Bhoys to include outcast Liam Henderson in the move.
And with 21-year-old Henderson having played just 23 minutes of first team football so far this term, Celtic could well consider such a move, but whether they actually do very much remains to be seen.
