Celtic have endured a miserable start to the season as they were dumped out of the Champions League by AEK Athens earlier this week in the 3rd round of qualifying, much to the disappointment of everybody involved with the club.

Why exactly the Bhoys failed to navigate their way past their Greek opponents has been debated aplenty in the aftermath of the result, and one of the recurring themes relates to the club’s lack of investment in the transfer market. Despite the fact Celtic are short of options in defence, they opted to spend in excess of £9 million to secure the signature of Odsonne Edouard from PSG.

However, according to the Belgian media outlet Nieuwsblad, Celtic are favourites to sign Jason Denayer ahead of Torino and Galatasary who are both expressing an interest.

Naturally, Brendan Rodgers will be hoping he can complete the signing of Denayer as soon as possible to strengthen his options in defence with a player who is familiar with the club after completing a loan spell in the 2014/15 campaign.

But with rival clubs expressing an interest there is no guarantee that Celtic will have it all their own way in their pursuit, and if Denayer ultimately decides to move elsewhere they should turn their attention towards Juan Foyth.

Tottenham’s 20-year-old centre-back arrived at the club from Estudiantes for a hefty £11.7 million fee last summer after impressing in South America, but so far his first-team opportunities have been limited.

If Toby Alderweireld remains at the club it seems incredibly unlikely that Foyth will play anything more than a bit-part role next season, so a loan move would be in the best interests of his development.

Foyth is a classy ball-playing defender with a brilliant ability to anticipate proceedings, so there’s no doubt he would become an instant hit at Celtic Park if Rodgers was able to bring him to the club this summer.
