Leeds should hijack Rangers’ bid for £9m-rated England international if imminent deal collapses

The Leeds United fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling positive following reports which claim the club are in pole position to secure the signature of Abel Hernandez this summer, but they aren’t getting carried away just yet.

The transfer market is always a turbulent and unpredictable period of time for clubs at all levels of the game, so until a deal is officially confirmed supporters are always wary of complications and potential snags. According to Leeds Live, the Whites are close to agreeing terms with Abel Hernandez over a free transfer when his contract with Hull City reaches its expiry at the end of the month, much to the delight of the Leeds supporters lining up our bar.

However, a player of Hernandez’s calibre is likely to be in high-demand, so it’s unlikely Leeds will have it all their own way in the coming days. With that in mind, Andrea Radrizanni should have a plan b in place to implement in case the proposed deal falls through, and one player he would be wise to consider is Rangers target Dominic Solanke (valued at £9 million by Transfermarkt).

According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers are interested in signing Solanke on loan this summer, and Gerrard’s presence as manager of the club could prove to be a decisive factor in potential negotiations. Despite this, Leeds should hijack Rangers bid for the 20-year-old England international in order to bolster their attacking options.

Solanke struggled to break into the first-team at Anfield last season due to the intensity in competition for a starting berth at the spearhead of Liverpool’s attack as Roberto Firmino was in devastating form throughout the campaign. Solanke struggled to find the back of the net last season when he was given a rare opportunity to shine, but he should be forgiven for his modest return of just 1 goal from 5 Premier League starts due to his lack of experience in the top-flight.

Momentum is so often a crucial factor for strikers, so if Solanke could get off to a good start with Leeds in the Championship he would have every chance of becoming a resounding success with the club. Leeds need further depth in attacking positions to boost their chances of clinching promotion next season, so they simply must submit a loan bid for Solanke if they are unsuccessful in their pursuit of Hernandez.
