Leeds United and their Premier League dream surely a good transfer home for Celtic outcast

The Leeds United fans in the Transfer Tavern are extremely irritated by their team’s showing in the FA Cup this weekend. Leeds crashed out at the first hurdle after League Two side Newport County beat them 2-1 with two late goals. The Leeds fans in the Transfer Tavern told us that this shows the lack of strength in depth at Elland Road right now.

This is something that needs addressing this January because a spate of injuries could lead to their promotion challenge being derailed. One area that needs a look at is centre back. Gaetano Berardi – a natural full-back – was forced to play in the middle of the park yesterday, highlighting the fact that Thomas Christiansen has few options in that department beyond first choice duo Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper.

The other centre-half was Conor Shaughnessy – a youngster who got Newport back into the game with an own goal. Leeds could do with signing another centre back this month.

And one man who is available and could come for cheap is Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko. The towering centre-back is surplus to requirements at Celtic after dropping down Brendan Rodgers’ pecking order and after the arrival of Marvin Compper at Parkhead.

The 26-year-old is available for transfer and has stated his desire to move to the Championship rather than back to Denmark with FC Copenhagen. Leeds should try to bring Sviatchenko down to Elland Road and partner him with Liam Cooper.

The Denmark international has shown his class before at Celtic but fell out of favour. He will now be determined to perform well to reignite his stalling career and Leeds would be a perfect environment for him. Sviatchenko would probably be tempted by the move as there is the prospect of moving up to the Premier League if Leeds can maintain their promotion challenge.
