Rangers supporters have been pretty upbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the early stages of 2018 after seeing their team end a testing 2017 with a deserved 0-0 draw away at Old Firm rivals Celtic last weekend.
Graeme Murty’s men endured a turbulent year last time out with Pedro Caixinha’s reign far from successful in bridging the gap to the dominant Celtic, with the Gers finishing a remarkable 39 points adrift of Brendan Rodgers’ side in last season’s Scottish Premiership. However, 2018 could well be a more positive year for the Scottish giants following the steadying of the ship overseen by Murty thus far, who then helped mastermind a goalless draw with Rodgers’ men in their final game of 2017, although Rangers still remain 11 points adrift of the Bhoys heading into the New Year.
Nonetheless, there are many optimistic Gers fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Scottish Sun, which suggests that Murty is set to oversee a huge overhaul of personnel at Ibrox this month, with numerous Caixinha’s flops set for the exit door.
The Portuguese made several signings during the summer in a bid to bolster his ranks ahead of the new season, with the likes of Graham Dorrans and Alfredo Morales coming in, yet there were many other additions which simply haven’t hit the ground running north of the border.
And recent reports suggest that as many as five of those flops, namely Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Eduardo Herrera, Dalcio, and Carlos Pena, are set to be axed by new boss Murty this month, as the Scotsman seeks to stamp his authority on the Rangers squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.
And given how little some of those Caixinha additions have offered the Gers in the last few months, they are unlikely to be missed by our resident Rangers fans should they indeed leave this month.
Landlord’s verdict: Not much good has come from Pedro Caixinha’s turbulent reign as Rangers manager, although some summer captures have somewhat improved the squad.
Yet several others haven’t and new boss Graeme Murty is reportedly seeking to offload as many as five of those flops this month in a bid to overhaul and stamp his authority on the playing squad, with Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Eduardo Herrera, Dalcio, and Carlos Pena all facing the exit door.
And it’s fair to say that several of our resident Rangers fans aren’t opposed to the idea of a complete squad transformation this month, with much still to be done if the Gers are to bridge the gap to current leaders Celtic.
This may well be a step in the right direction though.
