Rangers supporters have been widely expressing their discontent over the performances of Jon Flanagan since he arrived on a free transfer in the summer, but a recent report suggests that Steven Gerrard has identified a solution to the problem.
Flanagan has been widely scrutinised for his performances this season, but there are at least a few reasonable supporters who can appreciate his form is largely due to the position in which Gerrard has deployed him.
Flanagan is right-footed and natural;y a right-sided full-back, but he has predominantly played as a left-back under Gerrard this season.
The consequence is that Flanagan appears uncomfortable and the balance of the team is somewhat skewed, a situation which has consistently served to infuriate the supporters.
However, there could be a resolution looming on the horizon, as Rangers are preparing to lodge a bid for Tottenham Hotspur’s Jaden Brown, according to Football Insider.
The 19-year-old left-back is yet to break into Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team squad, and the intensity of competition for a starting berth could force him to seek a move away from north London.
His contract is due to expire in June 2019 and that fact alone should pave the way for Rangers to secure his services for next to nothing.
A natural left-footer who is at his most comfortable on the left-side of a back-four, Brown is exactly the type of player Rangers are crying out for.
His lack of experience at senior level is certainly a reason to suggest that he will not represent a quick-fix at left-back, but a slow integration should enable him to establish himself as Gerrard’s first-choice after just a few months at Ibrox.
With experience at England youth level and a product of Tottenham’s exceptional academy system, the future looks bright for Brown, and Gerrard would be wise to bring the prodigy to Scotland on a cunning cut-price deal in January.
The end of Flanagan’s dismal stint at left-back could finally be coming to an end in the winter window.
