It’s been an up and down season at points, but Steven Gerrard has got a lot of things right at the helm at Rangers. Their success in Europe so far has been a particular highlight, and it’s fair to say that fans will be expecting more delight over the coming weeks and months.
In terms of the personnel, many players have turned in magnificent performances so far this season, and Alfredo Morelos has, in particular, deserved a lot of praise. He’s been a lethal goalscorer, and he’s been arguably Rangers’ main man going forward. He’s won the club points already, and that will continue, you’d expect.
However, Gerrard is lucky enough to have a number of great players to choose from, and beyond Morelos, Scott Arfield will likely be another hugely influential matchwinner for the Gers this term.
A midfield constable, Arfield has enjoyed a brilliant season so far since moving from Burnley. The focal point of the midfield, his performances can go under the radar, but like so many midfield generals, much of the play that Rangers do going forward goes through him. He might not be the brute at the back defending from attackers, and he might not be assisting or finishing offensive moves, but he’s often in the middle of all of that, and so without his presence, Rangers may not be as successful.
A brilliant passer of the ball, he’s able to control games whenever the ball is at his feet. Just as comfortable playing short meter long passes as he is firing it across the pitch, the Canadian’s range of passing is crucial for the club. Not to mention, he’s a commanding figure in the midfield, and his physical presence allows the club to make a real impact at both ends of the field.
He might not finish the season with 10 goals and 15 assists, but in terms of raw importance, Gerrard will view Arfield as vital.
