Nobody can doubt the quality that Alfredo Morelos has with a football at his feet. The Columbian is arguably the best player in Scotland at present, and his remarkable goalscoring record this season proves it.
He’s helped push the Gers over the line on more than one occasion this season, and if they had been able to achieve glory this season as they would have hoped earlier in the campaign, you can bet that he would have been a key part of it.
And, make no mistake, he’s been a key part of everything positive that has happened at Ibrox this term.
However, he’s also been a big part of a lot of the negative events surrounding Rangers this term. Namely, his disciplinary problems have become an increasingly significant issue for not just the player – but for the club more broadly.
This was on full display on Sunday when the Gers took on Celtic. Always a tight game, the fixture blew in the direction of Celtic after Morelos was sent off for an incident involving Scott Brown.
Disciplinary issues like that have been a problem all season long for Morelos and throughout his career, and at some point, a decision on whether he’s worth the trouble will need to be made. So far, the Gers have resisted a change, but could this be the final straw? Certainly, you’d expect some fans to be raising their pitchforks in response.
Either way, something needs to happen – so here are some potential consequences of his red card…
A Chance For Jermain Defoe
Jermain Defoe has had precious few chances at Rangers this season, and that’s not been a real surprise. Alfredo Morelos has been in good form, and the Gers’ system simply doesn’t allow for more than one forward at any one time.
That said, Morelos’ latest red card does open up the door for Defoe to get another chance, and maybe he’ll take this one.
To be fair to the Englishman, he’s looked pretty good when he’s been on the field in Scotland, but he just hasn’t had a good run of games in the team.
Over the next few weeks, maybe he’ll be able to prove to Gerrard that he’s a reliable hand for the manager to turn to.
At what point is enough, enough?
Nobody can doubt the talent of Morelos, but what people can doubt is his reliability, as when he’s not on the field, he’s not delivering for the team.
At times, he’s become a liability. Rangers may well have beaten Celtic on Sunday had he not lost his head, and that simply can’t be allowed to keep happening.
It must get to a point in which Rangers will have to consider whether his goals are worth his constant discipline problems.
Some would argue that they are not.
That could, though, prove to be a problem for Rangers. If they deem his disciplinary issues to be a big problem, maybe prospective buyers would too.
Earlier this year, teams including Leicester City and Borussia Dortmund were reported as having an interest according to Sky Sports, and maybe that’s still the case.
However, maybe these teams are also looking at Morelos and thinking – do they really want to get involved? Would their money be better utilised elsewhere?
Just think, would Dortmund really be able to rely on Morelos on a big European night? After Sunday’s events, maybe not…
