The revolution at Rangers continues, and with the Ibrox faithful fully behind Steven Gerrard, any signings he makes will be welcomed with open arms. The Gers know that he’s going the right way about things the right way, and if he can secure the signing of Oldham’s George Edmundson it will only further prove that point.
The 21-year-old centre-half has had a baptism of fire in League Two, already featuring 79 times for the club at his young age, and it’s no surprise to see the EFL man attracting interest from a number of clubs. According to The Daily Mail, Rangers have joined a long list of clubs including Sunderland, Stoke City, Hull City and Preston North End who want to swoop for the Boundary Park stopper.
The young centre-half has a Transfermarkt valuation of just £45,000, yet Oldham have set his asking price at a fee ten times that amount as they demand £450,000 for any club after the defender. It’s for good reason too. The youngster has gone through the same footballing education as Premier League defender James Tarkowski, who is one of the brightest English defenders about, and Edmundson could be even better.
The Scottish giants will need to act quickly and throw their money at this one if it is to come to fruition, though, as they aren’t the only ones targetting the defender. If Gerrard was to sign him, it wouldn’t be good news for the current stoppers at Ibrox, but it would be excellent as far as the fans are concerned as he has the potential to shine for years to come in blue in Glasgow.
So what are the potential consequences of George Edmundson swapping Oldham for Rangers?
Rangers sign future star
When Rangers fans have a quality player on their hands they know it. Gerrard is building them up the right way and is moving towards getting the Gers a young core squad of players. Glen Kamara has been an instant hit, and with Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones on their way to the club in summer having signed pre-contract agreements, Edmundson would be just the latest star going to Ibrox.
With Edmunson, things are a little bit different, though. It’s unusual to see a 21-year-old already close to 100 senior appearances, yet Edmundson is almost there. He’s shone in League Two even if his Oldham side have flopped this season and if he was to swap Boundary Park for Ibrox then it would be a fantastic move for both the player and the club, as the only way for the young defender is up.
Nikola Katic has reason to worry
Nikola Katic is one man at Ibrox who could be set to suffer if Edmundson finds himself at Ibrox this summer. The Croatian defender has found himself in and out of the team a lot this season, and with Connor Goldson and Joe Worrall already proving tough for him to get in ahead of, when the young and impressive one for the future Edmundson comes in, he’ll only struggle further.
Steven Gerrard forked out on Katic last summer, parting with just over £2 million for his signature, according to Transfermarkt, and that money could easily be recouped, or at least most of it could, by moving him on again this summer. The chances are the Croatian will stay put, but with his game time already struggling, Edmundson’s arrival could be the final nail in his Ibrox coffin.
