According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers look poised to sign United States international Matt Polster from MLS outfit Chicago Fire.
The 25-year-old defensive midfielder trained with The Gers over December in Tenerife, and looks likely to team up with Steven Gerrard after missing the majority of 2018 with an injury.
Rangers have already signed Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis this January, but this potential signing is much more positive. Both Defoe and Davis are well into their 30s, and it is unclear how much longer their careers will last for. Polster shows slightly more long-term ambition, as this is someone that can feature at Ibrox for many years to come.
This is also a sign of The Gers matching rivals Celtic this transfer window, as The Bhoys have signed a number of players in quick succession. Without wanting their rivals to have an advantage over them come February, Rangers are equally strengthening their side.
This is a statement being made by Rangers that they are not simply in the Scottish Premiership to take part, they are there to win the competition. They have the hallmarks of a champion team, which will be very encouraging for the rest of the season and their title challenge.
Rangers have a hunger to make a statement and prevent Celtic from winning their tenth title in a row, and it does not look like they are going to relent over the next three weeks of the transfer window. Celtic should start to feel very nervous indeed.
