Rangers sent out a strong message to their SPFL rivals on Saturday afternoon with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Dundee at Ibrox.
Indeed, Rangers’ return to action after the international break was a positive one for the supporters as they dismantled Dundee in Glasgow with Alfredo Morelos leading the line as the lone striker once again.
Gerrard’s 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 system paid dividends on the day against Dundee but sterner tests certainly await the club as they bid to challenge for the title this season.
Although Gerrard has favoured a 1 striker system this season with Umar Sadiq seemingly not ready for a first-team opportunity after playing just 13 minutes of SPFL football, he would be wise to return to the transfer market next summer to secure the services of a player who would be excellent alongside Morelos, namely Oliver McBurnie.
The 22-year-old centre-forward struggled to break into the Swansea first-team since joining the club for just £315k back in July 2015, but a loan spell at Barnsley between January and May 2018 saw him notch 9 goals from 17 appearances.
His success in the Championship convinced new man Graham Potter to make him the club’s first-choice striker – a decision which has paid off so far.
McBurnie has netted 4 goals from the Swans first 7 fixtures this season and provided the club with a focal point to build their attacks around.
Intelligent hold up play, a bullish attitude and a commanding aerial presence form the basis of his success at centre-forward and, combining that quality with Morelos’ direct style of play would hand Gerrard a dream partnership at centre-forward.
Add in McBurnie’s aggression to complement Morelos’ hot-headed nature and Rangers can be sure of boasting a centre-forward pairing with plenty of fire in the belly to spearhead a genuine title challenge.
The manner in which McBurnie has started the season suggests that by the end of the season he will command a transfer fee well in excess of the £315k Swansea paid to secure his signature, but if he continues his recent run of form throughout the entirety of the campaign there’s no doubt he would be well worth forking out for in 2019.
