Steven Gerrard completed a multitude of transfers in the summer to put his own stamp on Rangers, but it’s a player who was signed long before his arrival who has really caught the eye in recent weeks.
That player is Ryan Jack, a central midfield lynchpin who appears to be growing in confidence with every passing week. A string of fine performances have really caught the eye of the supporters in recent weeks and silenced those who have consistently doubted his ability in the past.
The reward: a contract extension which will keep him at Ibrox until 2021. Jack’s decision to put pen to paper on a new deal was confirmed earlier today by the BBC.
Naturally the news has been greeted with enthusiasm by the supporters, and rightly so. Not only will it nullify potential speculation regarding Jack’s future in January, it will put Rangers in a more commanding position to demand a significant transfer fee if clubs do eventually come calling further down the line.
Pedro Caixinha was the man who brought Jack to Ibrox on a free transfer in 2017, and Gerrard has the Portuguese manager to thank for bringing him to the club. The manner in which Jack has developed at the club, particularly this season under Gerrard, proves that Caixinha’s decision was something of a masterstroke.
Ultimately football matches are won and lost in the midfield, and if Gerrard can strengthen the quality of the players operating around Jack there is no question he will have the basis of a formidable midfield unit.
It’s reasonable to suggest that Gerrard’s playing career has provided him with the tools from which to develop Jack’s game this season, which perhaps hints that a Lasanna Coulibaly transformation is just around the corner… But don’t hold your breath.
Either way, there’s no question that Jack’s transfer value has risen in light of his opening to the current campaign and his new contract will serve to ensure that Rangers will be in a commanding position to make a significant profit on his services in the future.
