Former Rangers player Alan Hutton has heaped praise on Jermain Defoe for his influence on the Ibrox dressing room and what he can still offer when speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
Hutton and Defoe shared the dressing room together at White Hart Lane upon Defoe’s return to Tottenham Hotspur, having moved to Portsmouth when the Scotsman arrived in North London.
Having grown up through the academy and proved his worth in the first-team, Hutton himself knows how important it is having experience and older players to look up to behind the scenes.
“Of course he has a big impact in the dressing room. I think experience nowadays is vital, you need to have that. He’s played at the highest level, he’s played in some great teams.”
For those who may be struggling or trying to further develop in Glasgow, Hutton feels Defoe’s presence is exactly what they need. “To have somebody like that to call on if you’re having a little bit of a down time, or even someone like Morelos – he’s a young man and he scored a lot of goals but he is still a young man.”
Having a player and a personality like Defoe around on a day-to-day basis will only help the younger players and Hutton is sure about that. He added: “They look up to people like that, everyone does – I think you need people in your squad like that who is helping everyone.”
Defoe has netted nine times across 13 games in all competitions as of yet this season, with just six of those games coming as starts. Upon his arrival, Hutton was sure he would produce the goods to back-up the impeccable scoring record he racked up in England, saying: “He loves scoring goals, he loves football and I knew as soon as he went there, this guy’s going to score goals.”
There is a reason behind the numbers Defoe can produce at his age and that’s a testament to the work he puts in to keep himself fresh, as Hutton added: “He’s a guy that obviously I’ve known for a long time and for being a man at 36, around that age, he just looks after himself so well.”
It is highly unlikely that the goals are stopping any time soon either. Hutton added: “You see people like Tavernier putting balls into the box, they’re going to create opportunities and that’s a guy who’s going to score. What a player to have, whether to be on the bench or to start games, to help you out.”
