Much of the talk in Glasgow over the course of the week will have been about Sunday’s Old Firm derby between Celtic and Rangers. The Light Blues currently hold the bragging rights following the previous meeting and fans would love to return to Ibrox with the scalp of their bitter rivals once again.
However, one report has emerged that may have put a dampener on the occasion before the game at Celtic Park has even been played.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Football Insider, Alfredo Morelos is set to feature in his last away Old Firm derby on Sunday, as speculation about his future at Rangers continues to burn.
A number of clubs across Europe have been credited with an interest in the international, with the likes of Leicester City and Borussia Dortmund just an example.
Firstly, the news that the contract was purely to protect the value of Morelos and give Rangers some bargaining power when it comes down to a transfer fee should not come as a surprise – it had always looked a rather obvious tactic.
Although there is still one more Old Firm game to play at Ibrox, it is unlikely that the 22-year-old would be making a return to Celtic Park in the shirt of the Light Blues anytime soon given the acceptance behind the scenes that he could be on his way out the door in the summer.
Rangers will know that they will be able to command a significant fee for his release, however, the hard work will be trying to find a player who is capable of replacing him almost immediately and can provide them with the goals they need to be able to challenge Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
With the likelihood that Morelos will depart, it would not be a bad idea for Steven Gerrard and the senior officials at the club to start spending the money in their head and brainstorming ideas for when that day eventually comes.
The best that Rangers fans can hope for the time being though, is that Morelos puts Celtic to the sword and helps his side record a second Old Firm derby win this season on Sunday.
