Rangers have decided to appoint Billy Kirkwood as the club’s loan manager, the club’s official website has confirmed.
Initially working in the club’s academy as a youth coach, Kirkwood has been promoted to work alongside Steven Gerrard and oversee all the Light Blues currently out on loan and keep an eye on their development.
It will also be his job to identify players that could be available to be loaned to the Ibrox outfit and which men will have a chance of making the senior side.
“We have gone internally as we believe we have the right person in Billy Kirkwood. When you look at Billy, he ticks every single box,” he said.
“He has been a manager, he has been a player, he knows the Academy system inside out and back to front, and he is everything that we want and has everything we want in terms of being able to develop those boys.
“He has the boys’ ear, they have high regard for him and he is well-respected. If it is on your doorstep, why should you look elsewhere?”
The move to appoint Kirkwood as the club’s new loan manager should prove to be an excellent move and one that could help to improve Rangers moving forward.
Ideally, he will be tasked with finding suitable clubs for the Ibrox outfit’s youngsters to head out on loan and develop further, giving them the best chance of breaking through to the first-team in the future.
Kirkwood knows the club extremely well, as Allen pointed out, so he should take to the new role with relative ease, which will be pleasing to all those concerned.
