Borna Barisic is set to get his chance to nail down his place in the Rangers team, according to a report by Football Insider.
An injury to Jon Flanagan (who had to undergo a second hernia operation in three months) has opened the door for the Croatia international and it is believed it will provide him with an extended run in the first-team.
The 26-year-old is thought to have impressed Steven Gerrard with his attitude and performances in the club’s training sessions, amid suggestions that he could have been offloaded this summer.
This is an opportunity Barisic will need to take with both hands if he is to improve on his first 12 months at Ibrox.
Flanagan appears to have become Gerrard’s first-choice left-back recently and even singled the ex-Liverpool defender out as the only player who deserved any recognition from their Old Firm defeat to Celtic last weekend.
In truth, the Croatia international struggled to make a real impact in his debut campaign for Rangers following his £2.2m move from NK Osijek last summer.
The 26-year-old suffered a couple of injuries that meant he missed out on a lot of football, however he still managed to prove rather lethal going forward as he provided six assists in his 23 appearances.
Indeed, in the opportunities he has had this season so far, he has already shown some glimpses of the attacking ability he has in his locker and can provide Rangers with going forward.
In his five appearances to date, Barisic has managed to score one goal and provide his team-mates with two assists (Transfermarkt) – despite not appearing to be in Gerrard’s first-team plans as of the moment.
As mentioned, this could be the perfect opportunity for Barisic to finally establish himself as Rangers’ first-choice left-back and become the player that Gerrard and the Light Blues would have expected him to be when they initially forked out the £2.2m for him last summer.
A fully-fledged international for a country that regularly competes in football’s biggest tournaments, it would not be a surprise if there were a degree of expectation from the club’s fanbase regarding his performances moving forward.
