Premiership giants Rangers are reportedly looking to sign Siriki Dembele from English League One club Peterborough United.
Fulham, Newcastle United and Stoke City have all been linked with a move for the Peterborough winger, but the Posh director of football Barry Fry has now confirmed that the Gers have been monitoring the player as well.
Should Rangers sign Siriki Dembele?
Rangers have ‘watched’ Dembele
The 24-year-old Dembele is eligible to play internationally for England, Scotland or the Ivory Coast. His current deal at Peterborough United runs out in the summer of 2021. While there has previously been interest in him, Fry has now revealed the Gers’ interest in him too.
He told Peterborough Today:
“Rangers have watched Siriki twice as have the Scottish national side.
“Newcastle manager Steve Bruce watched him at Crewe when he didn’t play well. There will always be interest in players like Siriki, but we don’t have to sell him. We have him for another 18 months and we’d rather he stayed until the summer when we can reassess his situation.”
The article also claims that Dembele’s current club wants to keep him till the end of the campaign, to make sure that he helps them get promoted to the Championship. The Posh are also not under any pressure to sell the 24-year-old, despite the fact that the Gers are watching him.
‘Best player in League One’
Posh co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has already had high praise for Dembele and he recently said:
“Statistically Siriki is the best player in League One.”
The 24-year-old has made 17 League One appearances this season, contributing to a total of ten goals so far. In the previous league campaign, the winger had contributed to 13 goals in 25 League One appearances. That is clearly suggestive of the fact that Dembele is an impressive talent.
He is a striker by trade, but can also play on the left-wing or the right-wing. As things stand, Rangers don’t have a true out-and-out option for the right wing spot and Dembele could add depth and quality to that position. Because of that, signing the player would make a lot of sense for Steven Gerrard’s men.
