Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their team’s return to league action this evening when they host second place Aberdeen at Ibrox, hoping to begin 2018 with three points off their nearest rivals in the Scottish Premiership table.
Graeme Murty’s men concluded 2017 with a spirited 0-0 draw away at Old Firm rivals Celtic to give them some optimism heading into the New Year, even if they have begun the year in third place in the table and 11 points adrift of Brendan Rodgers’ side. And alongside a handful of shrewd signings this month, including Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings, there is much positivity among our resident Gers fans that 2018 could prove to be a much better year than 2017.
And a recent report from The Daily Record is likely to further that optimism, as they report that a deal to bring ‘top’ target Greg Docherty to the club from fellow top-flight side Hamilton is close to completion.
The 21-year-old midfielder came up through the ranks at New Douglas Park and has since gone on to make 109 senior appearances for the club, in which time he has scored eight goals and laid on 13 assists.
And with three goals and six assists coming in 21 Scottish Premiership matches this term, the Scotland Under-21 international is going from strength to strength, and has unsurprisingly attracted the attention of Murty’s Rangers in recent times.
And given Docherty’s efforts so far this season for Hamilton, it’s a move which is likely to encourage those Rangers fans lining up at the bar even more ahead of 2018.
Landlord’s verdict: Rangers manager Graeme Murty has certainly steadied the ship at Ibrox following his appointment as boss, and this month he has set about overhauling the Gers playing squad.
And the former Reading and Southampton defender looks set to make his sixth signing of the winter as reports suggest that a deal to bring Greg Docherty to the club is seemingly imminent, with it reported that it could be done at some stage on Wednesday.
And with three goals and six assists from the centre of midfield, the 21-year-old will certainly bolster Murty’s midfield ranks at Ibrox as the Scottish giants seek to bridge the gap to champions Celtic.
