Rangers may think they need to bring in a quality attacking midfielder in summer, but the man for the job is right under Steven Gerrard’s nose, and it’s Greg Docherty.
Frankly, they can’t afford to let him leave.
The 22-year-old has been on loan at Shrewsbury this season and he’s impressed in League One. Indeed, he’s scored ten goals and made 11 assists across 49 appearances in all competitions this season, and he should be brought back to be used as the Gers’ secret weapon.
That’s right, 21 goals.
The Scottish Sun, via the Daily Record, have reported that rivals Hibernian have had scouts watching him as the season comes to a close, and they are looking to bring him in on loan during the summer.
It’d be a major missed opportunity if he left Ibrox once again this summer, particularly as Rangers have struggled to provide enough service to Alfredo Morelos this season. He could come in at no cost and help fire them to their first major trophy since their liquidation.
If he’s farmed out on loan again, the youngster will get tired of being thrown from pillar to post and might request and permanent move. With the money being fairly tight in Scotland compared to other leagues, promoting youth is vital, so they can’t afford to lose the player’s quality over the summer.
Gerrard should resist any approach for Docherty and make sure he beds him into the Rangers set-up to help improve service to their front line.
Now’s the time for his opportunity, the Gers shouldn’t waste it.
