Rangers expected to complete Gareth McAuley deal

Rangers could be about to add another defender to their ranks this summer as Steven Gerrard looks to improve his squad.

According to a report by The Herald Scotland, the Light Blues are expected to complete the signing of Gareth McAuley on a free transfer.

The veteran defender is currently without a club following his decision to leave West Bromwich Albion after they were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.

The North Ireland international is thought to have been monitored by the Ibrox outfit for around six months, however, it appears they have only just made a significant move for the 38-year-old following their progression into the Europa League group stages.

It is understood that McAuley could have joined Scottish Premiership rivals Heart of Midlothian, however, a deal is thought to have fallen through, although it is claimed the defender has agreed to a deal with an unnamed side.

The Verdict:

Rangers have been extremely busy in the transfer window this summer and it appears that they are not quite finished with their business.

McAuley is the latest name to have been linked with the Ibrox outfit and could be a solid addition to the club as he would help to provide cover and valuable experience for the likes of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.

Interestingly, the veteran defender is thought to have already agreed to a deal with an unknown club and it remains to be seen if Rangers can convince him to join them as the transfer window closes.
