Rangers face January battle as English side ‘prepare’ midfielder bid – report

Rangers supporters have been in quite high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side add four new players to their ranks ahead of the second half of the Scottish Premiership season.

Graeme Murty’s men went into the winter break third in the top-flight and 11 points adrift of leaders Celtic, but the Gers have since added four new faces who could help them bridge that gap to Brendan Rodgers’ side in the coming months. Sean Goss and Jamie Murphy both made loan moves to Ibrox in the first week of January, while Jason Cummings and Russell Martin have also made a temporary move north of the border in the last few days, leaving Nottingham Forest and Norwich respectively for the rest of the season.

Consequently, there have been some satisfied Rangers fans in the Tavern in recent times, although they are unlikely to be overly thrilled by a recent report from The Daily Record, which suggests that Leeds United are set to up the ante in pursuit of attacker Josh Windass.

The 24-year-old made the move to Ibrox back in 2016 and has since gone on to make 51 appearances for the Gers, in which time he has scored seven goals and laid on ten assists.

Yet it has been this season in which the Englishman has really proven his worth, having netted six goals and laying on five assists in just 20 Scottish Premiership games for Murty’s side, only Alfredo Morales (ten) has scored more for the Gers this term.

And, unsurprisingly, Windass’ fine form has attracted interest from those south of the border, and recent reports suggest that Championship side Leeds are set to join the race for the 24-year-old by ‘preparing’ an offer of more than the reported £500,000 Preston North End bid a few weeks back.

Thus, Murty and the Rangers hierarchy look set for a battle to keep the in-form attacker at Ibrox beyond the January 31 deadline.

Landlord’s verdict: Josh Windass has been a shining light in Rangers’ so far unspectacular Scottish Premiership campaign, having netted six goals and laid on five assists for Graeme Murty’s side.

And his impressive displays for the Gers have reportedly attracted much attention, and recent reports suggest that Leeds United are to join the chase for the 24-year-old, in which they are reportedly set to offer more than the £500,000 Preston North End bid a few weeks ago.

Thus, it appears that Rangers face a huge battle trying to fend off interest in Windass between now and the January 31 deadline.
