Leeds United and Rangers supporters have been in contrasting moods in the Transfer Tavern this week, with the former having seen their side lose back-to-back Championship matches, while the latter celebrated a 3-1 success at Hearts last weekend.
Thomas Christiansen’s Leeds were top of the league back in September but have since struggled for form, and their plight was made a whole lot worse by Sheffield United and Derby County in the last seven days, with both sides winning 2-1 at Elland Road. However, things were much better for Rangers under caretaker manager Graeme Murty last weekend, as the Gers began the post-Pedro Caixinha era with a 3-1 victory over Hearts at Hampden Park, with a Kenny Miller brace inspiring the Scottish giants to a much-needed three points.
Thus, while Leeds fans have been particularly quiet in the Tavern this week, Rangers supporters have been toasting their side’s weekend success, yet they may be slightly unsettled by a recent report from Football Insider, which suggests that the Yorkshire giants are eyeing up a move for Declan John.
The 22-year-old made the move to Ibrox on loan back in the summer and has since gone on to impress north of the border with two goals and one assist in five Scottish Premiership matches, with both goals coming in their 4-1 victory over Hamilton back in September.
Yet the left-back’s future at parent club Cardiff City is far from certain given that his current deal expires at the end of the season, and as such Christiansen’s Leeds are reportedly seeking to take advantage by monitoring the youngster’s form.
And this could spell danger for Rangers as Cardiff could look to sell John in January as opposed to letting him go on a free in the summer, so the Scottish giants will have to be on alert in the New Year in case the situation changes.
Landlord’s verdict: It has been a turbulent few weeks at Rangers, what with Pedro Caixinha relieved of his duties last week after a disappointing start to the season.
And it doesn’t appear as though things are getting much better for the Gers as they could lose loanee Declan John in January, as reports suggest that Leeds United are keeping tabs on the 22-year-old, whose contract at parent club Cardiff City runs out in the summer.
The Bluebirds thus may look to get what they can for the Wales international in January, which is unlikely to please the Gers or indeed the new manager, whoever he may be.
Clearly, the Scottish giants are facing an uncertain January regarding the youngster’s future.
