Rangers in race for £1.5m deal as Murty seeks midfield reinforcements – report

Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern have used the first week of 2018 to look back on their club’s 2017, a year in which Pedro Caixinha’s reign started and indeed ended, with the club slipping further behind Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

The Gers ended up an astonishing 39 points adrift of Brendan Rodgers’ side at the end of last season to underline the immense work that needed doing at Ibrox, but defeat to Progres Niederkorn in Europa League qualifying further emphasised that Caixinha was not the man to carry out that work. He was unsurprisingly relieved of his duties at the end of October and replaced by Graeme Murty, who has subsequently steadied the ship and earned himself the chance to impress between now and the end of the season.

Thus, there hasn’t been loads for our resident Rangers to shout about in recent times, although they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Sun (via The Daily Star), which suggests that their club are part of a three-way battle in pursuit of Fulham’s Kevin McDonald.

The 29-year-old made the move to Craven Cottage back in 2016 after a three-year spell at Wolves, and has since gone on to make 71 appearances for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side, 45 of which came last term in the Cottagers’ run to the Championship play-off semi-finals, where they lost to Reading.

And with 22 league appearances already this season, McDonald looks set to again play a part in Fulham’s quest for promotion come May, yet he may not remain a Cottager after the January window if recent reports are anything to go by, which suggest that Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, and of course Rangers are interested in the midfielder, who is reported to fetch £1.5 million.

Thus, it very much remains to be seen where the 29-year-old’s future lies.

Landlord’s verdict: With Sean Goss and Jamie Murphy already through the door at Ibrox this month, Rangers boss Graeme Murty isn’t wasting any time improving his squad ahead of the second half of the season.

And there could be another incoming in the form of Fulham’s Kevin McDonald, who is reportedly attracting the interest of the Gers, as well as Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday.

But with things appearing to be heading in the right direction at Ibrox, McDonald may well be tempted to continue his playing career north of the border at one of Scotland’s biggest clubs.
