Rangers: Jason Holt wanted by St. Johnstone

Rangers’ Jason Holt could be handed another opportunity to leave the club this summer, according to a report by The Scottish Sun.

The midfielder is wanted by St. Johnstone, who are keen to take him on a season-long loan as they look to add some experience to their side.

The 26-year-old spent last season away from Ibrox as well, having played for ex-Ger Joey Barton at Fleetwood Town.

Holt will have become a largely forgotten figure at Rangers over the past 12 months or so as he is yet to have featured for Steven Gerrard.

The midfielder’s last appearance for the Light Blues actually came back in May 2018 when he provided a side being looked after by Jimmy Nicholl with two assists and a goal in a 5-5 draw away to Hibernian (Transfermarkt).

His chances of playing any role for Gerrard appear to be rather slim, as the manager has made a number of changes to his midfield options over the past three transfer windows he has had. The likes of Steven Davis, Scott Arfield, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack are all available to him (Transfermarkt), meaning the 26-year-old will have likely fallen down the pecking order.

Holt did get praise for his contributions in a Rangers shirt by ex-manager Pedro Caixinha, with the Portuguese boss lauding the former Scotland Under-21 international’s work ethic.

Speaking to The Glasgow Evening Times back in 2017, he said: “Let me say, it would be really unfair for me if I didn’t refer to Jason Holt.

“He is a hard worker. We kept him from last season because he is always like this and you know that you really can count on him.”

Holt’s time at Ibrox certainly looks as though it will be coming to an end imminently, especially as Gerrard does not appear to have any plans to use him within his first-team moving forward.

As noted by The Scottish Sun, the 26-year-old has just 12 months left on his contract and it would not be wrong to suggest that he does not have any real chance of extending it any further.

Joining St. Johnstone could be the perfect opportunity for him to get back to playing regular first-team football at a competitive level once again and, perhaps, it should be an offer that gets taken up if one is received.
