Rangers: Jordan Jones left out of Steven Gerrard’s Europa League squad - Latest News

Jordan Jones has been omitted from Rangers’ Europa League squad for the competition’s upcoming group stage, according to a report by The Daily Record.

The Northern Ireland international was one of the most notable players to have been left out of Steven Gerrard’s team list for the games against Feyenoord, BSC Young Boys and Porto.

Whether it was because of the needless red card he picked up last weekend, or the injury he sustained whilst making the tackle is the reason for his exclusion remains to be seen, although it is considered to be somewhat a surprise.

As mentioned, Jones picked up an injury when making the tackle on Moritz Bauer in the final minutes of the game on Sunday, however it was recently revealed that he was not expected to miss much more than four to six weeks of action (Daily Record).

The former Kilmarnock winger has had a rather encouraging start to life for the Light Blues despite not completing 90 minutes for Rangers yet. The 24-year-old has managed to make nine appearances across all competitions and has provided his team-mates with two assists – both coming in the Europa League (Transfermarkt).

Perhaps, though, the arrival of Ryan Kent on a permanent deal from Liverpool for a rumoured fee of £7.5m was always going to threaten the Northern Ireland international’s place in the side.

The 22-year-old went on to make 43 appearances for Rangers across all competitions, netting six goals and providing a further nine assists (Transfermarkt). His performances were also recognised at the highest level of the game within Scotland as well at the end of the season as he was named the Scottish Young Player of the Year for the 2018/19 campaign.

It is a surprise to hear that Jones has been omitted from the Europa League squad as he definitely appeared to be playing well within the competition – although, admittedly, it was against sides that, perhaps, he should be rather comfortable coming up against.

With the fact that he is not expected to miss too much action in the coming weeks, there would surely have been some expectation that the £675k-rated winger (Transfermarkt) would at least have been an option that Gerrard would look to use at some point throughout their European campaign.
