Rangers will look to sign Leeds United’s Kemar Roofe this summer should they lose Alfredo Morelos, according to a report by The Scottish Sun.
The Colombian forward is thought to be the subject of some intense interest at the moment as AC Milan are believed to have been watching the South American with a close eye in recent matches, whilst the likes of Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Girondins de Bordeaux and Eintracht Frankfurt have all been linked.
Steven Gerrard and the Light Blues have already been putting contingency plans in place should the Rossoneri make a move for him and believe Roofe could be the ideal replacement.
Firstly, replacing Morelos is going to be a huge task for Rangers as the Colombia international has proven to be a prolific marksman for the club since arriving at Ibrox two summers ago.
The 23-year-old has netted 49 goals in his 92 appearances for the club following his £1million move from HJK Helsinki, netting 30 times in 48 matches across all competitions last season (Transfermarkt). According to WhoScored, only James Tavernier and Scott Arfield recorded double figures as well, whereas Jermain Defoe was the closest forward in the rankings with eight.
Replacing the goals the £2.7m-rated ace (Transfermarkt) provides Rangers with is going to be a tough ask, however, Roofe could just be the man to help should the South American depart.
The Leeds forward was pretty remarkable in front of goal for Marcelo Bielsa’s side last season, as he bagged himself 15 goals in what turned out to be an injury-hit campaign. The 26-year-old missed a total of 13 games last season for the Whites and, if he had not, he may have been the difference in helping them finally make their long-awaited return to the Premier League.
Indeed, Marcelo Bielsa blamed the club’s lack of deadly finishing as one of the reasons they weren’t promoted, so perhaps things could have been different had the former Oxford man stayed fit.
However, Gerrard may have concerns regarding Roofe, as he can be as unavailable as Morelos has been in the past but for different reasons. The Championship forward is set to spend another four weeks or so on the sidelines with another ankle injury (BBC), whereas Rangers had to make do without their Colombian superstar for a number of crucial games because of his poor disciplinary record; the 23-year-old missed ten games last season (Transfermarkt).
Morelos’ future at Rangers certainly remains a talking point for those at Ibrox as AC Milan look to impose themselves in the race for the forward this summer, so it is wise that Gerrard has a contingency plan in place should a departure happen.
Roofe could be an excellent option for the Light Blues to look at as he could be available on a cut-price deal as he enters the final 12 months of his contract and has shown he knows how to find the back of the net on a regular basis.
Whether his latest injury setback will have an impact on any potential move this summer or whether Leeds are prepared to entertain offers for him remains to be seen.
However, if he does not sign a new contract, Gerrard and Rangers could look to complete a pre-contract agreement with him in the winter as they have done with so many of their other targets (Transfermarkt).
Although, if Morelos does go, there will be an immediate need for a new forward, so whether the Light Blues can wait that long is up for debate.
