Rangers: Light Blues looking to send Jason Holt packing

Rangers are working to terminate Jason Holt’s contract, according to a report by Football Insider.

It has been claimed the Ibrox outfit have held talks with the forgotten midfielder about cancelling his current deal with the club and are willing to pay a chunk of money owed for the final year.

The 26-year-old has been told he does not have a future with the Light Blues as Steven Gerrard has no plans to include him in his first-team squad.

It is hardly a surprise to hear that Rangers are trying to offload Holt this summer and appear to be looking at every avenue they have in shifting him off the wage bill at the club.

St. Johnstone were said to have held an interest in the midfielder earlier this month, although it had been claimed they were only willing to take him on an initial season-long loan, perhaps, because of the season-ending injury he suffered whilst playing in a spell for Fleetwood Town last year (club’s official website).

In fact, the 26-year-old’s last appearance for the Light Blues actually came back in May 2018 when he provided a side being looked after by Jimmy Nicholl with two assists and a goal in a 5-5 draw away to Hibernian (Transfermarkt).

It is no surprise that he is deemed surplus to requirements at Ibrox, though, either. With the likes of Steven Davis, Scott Arfield, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack all available to Gerrard (Transfermarkt), it would have been extremely difficult to see him pull on the Rangers shirt once again and further add to the 115 appearances he made across all competitions, whereby he scored 15 goals and provided 19 assists.

The writing clearly looks to have been on the wall for Holt and his chances of returning to the Rangers set-up had always looked rather slim indeed.

Whether the club and player can reach an agreement before Monday’s transfer deadline remains to be seen. It, however, might be in the midfielder’s best interests if they did.

Holt would still be allowed to join a number of sides as a free agent after the window slams shut, meaning he can think about any offer that may come his way and make the right move in trying to get his career back on track.
