Michael Owen has made the (unsurprising) claim that Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos’ recent performances are going to attract plenty of interest in him, whilst lauding the Colombia international’s ability on the pitch and in front of goal.
Speaking on The Early Kick-Off (via The Daily Record), the ex-striker-turned-pundit said: “A lot of people will be interested. He’s that type, isn’t he? He’s the modern centre forward, a strong lad that can almost do every job.
“He can score goals, hold the ball up and run the channels. He’s going to tempt a lot of people. That finish (against Porto) was unbelievable, on his weaker foot as well, it was top class.”
As mentioned, the idea that Morelos could be a wanted man in the upcoming transfer window is hardly news-breaking and it is a story that those associated with the 23-year-old has had to deal with for what seems like an eternity.
The Colombian has been heavily linked with moves away from Ibrox to Premier League clubs, with the likes of Leicester City said to have been interested last summer, whilst Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have been credited with a keenness ahead of the January window.
Indeed, when a player with a goalscoring record that the £6.75m-rated ace has, it is hardly a surprise that a host of clubs have been sniffing around. Morelos’ record currently stands at 69 goals in 116 appearances, having bagged 21 in 25 so far this season (TransferMarkt).
It would not be a surprise if he were to get himself on the scoresheet once again this weekend when Gerrard’s side take to the pitch away at Livingston on Sunday afternoon.
Owen hasn’t mentioned anything that will surprise those in Glasgow, but whilst speculation is always going to continue surrounding the South American, Rangers will just need to make the most of the time they have with their talisman.
Morelos’ goals are going to be crucial in the Light Blues’ efforts to try and topple Old Firm rivals Celtic from the top of their perch in Scottish football, whilst the 23-year-old is likely going to be the man the club look towards to help them qualify for the next round of the Europa League.
