Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern are buzzing for the future under Steven Gerrard with plenty of names already arriving at Ibrox.
Gerrard’s summer recruitment drive is in full flow as he looks to strengthen his squad and challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership. Jamie Murphy arrived on a permanent deal from Brighton while Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor swapped Burnley and Hull for the SPFL on free transfers. The signings must not stop if the Gers are to compete with the Hoops.
According to reports in Turkey (via the Daily Record), Rangers could lose their top goal scorer, Alfredo Morelos, to Besiktas who have watched the forward with a view to a summer move. Despite his poor performances towards the end of the season, his goals will need to be replaced. With that in mind, Gerrard should look at the Championship to find his goal machine.
The man he should target is Middlesbrough forward – Britt Assombalonga. The striker swapped Nottingham Forest for Boro last summer in a £15m deal and netted 15 Championship goals for his new club. With Boro missing out on promotion, he could be set to depart after just one season at the club.
He is valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt and would be a massive star in Scotland. Under Tony Pulis, Boro does not play to Assombalonga’s strengths, and Gerrard could give him a new lease of life at Ibrox. An expert finisher, the 25-year-old is the perfect signing to transform Rangers into title candidates.
