Nikola Katic’s place in the Rangers team could be under threat, according to a recent report by Football Insider.
It has been claimed the Croatia international could be dropped for the Light Blues’ upcoming Europa League match with Feyenoord at Ibrox following his performance against Livingston at the weekend in the Scottish Premiership.
Connor Goldson was thought to have been angry with the 22-year-old’s performance at various stages of the game, which could force Steven Gerrard into making a change ahead of their contest with the Eredivisie outfit.
Katic did not have one of his best matches as a Rangers player, however, judging by a selection of player ratings, it did not appear as though he had a performance that would suggest that he needs dropping ahead of the Feyenoord meeting.
According to Rangers News, they gave the Croat a six, stating: “One or two dodgy moments but solid enough performance from the Croatian. Seems as though he’ll put his head into anything. His distribution looks to be improving as he tried spraying balls forward at times.”
Ibrox Noise also appeared to echo those same thoughts with their own rating, scoring him a seven and wrote: “One slightly weak moment which in fairness Goldson bailed HIM out for in the second half, this was an otherwise solid performance again from Katic, even if ultimately he didn’t have a huge amount to do.”
In fact, it appeared both fan sites were suggesting that Goldson was the one that needed to be taken out of Gerrard’s side, with Rangers News stating that “he looked shaky”, whilst Ibrox Noise noted “he continues to struggle to be the kind of defender Rangers need”.
Katic, who is valued at £1.8m by Transfermarkt, has impressed the management team at Ibrox this season, with it being revealed he had been keeping Filip Helander out of the side because of his performances throughout the early stages of the campaign (The Herald).
Indeed, it will be interesting to see whether Katic is dropped for the Europa League game against Feyenoord, although it would, perhaps, be surprising as he has featured in six of the eight games they have already played in the competition (Transfermarkt).
However, should Gerrard decide to make a change in his backline, it would be safe to say that he will not be short of options. Both Helander and George Edmundson would be available for the manager to choose for the game.
