Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern are buzzing at the latest news coming out of Ibrox with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in the race to take the Gers job at the end of the season.
Talks have reportedly taken place with Gerrard and the Rangers hierarchy with a view to appointing the former England captain at the end of the season. Indeed, Gerrard took a coaching role under Jurgen Klopp after retiring from playing, managing Liverpool’s U18 squad with great success this season and the German is not surprised at the interest in his services.
Rangers are currently second in the Scottish Premiership on goal difference after being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by rivals Celtic last weekend.
If Gerrard does make a move to Scotland, Rangers should look to take some of Liverpool’s stars with him.
One man who finds himself heading through the exit door is Lazar Markovic. The Serbian winger has been farmed out on loan to Anderlecht after finding himself with no role to play at Anfield.
Markovic joined from Benfica for £20m back in 2014, signed by now Celtic manager – Brendan Rodgers. He has not appeared for the Reds since 2015 against Queens Park Rangers.
Valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, Rangers could be the perfect destination to kick-start his career again. The winger is just 24-years-old, so there is plenty of time for the former Partizan Belgrade prospect to turn things around.
Liverpool have been actively looking to get him off their books in recent transfer windows and could be willing to broker a cut-price deal with the Gers especially if Gerrard takes over.
Signing Markovic would put Rangers one step closing to catching Celtic.
Rangers fans, would Lazar Markovic be a good signing for the Gers? Let us know!
