Rangers: Steven Gerrard turned down opportunity to sign Lewis Holtby

Before sealing a move to Blackburn Rovers, Rangers were believed to have had the opportunity to sign ex-Tottenham Hotspur man Lewis Holtby in the summer, according to a report by Football Insider.

The midfielder was released by Hamburg at the end of his contract and the Scottish Premiership outfit are just one of the clubs said to have had the chance to offer him a contract.

The 29-year-old’s representatives turned to the Ibrox outfit as a possibility, however Steven Gerrard decided against pursuing a deal for the former Germany international.

Holtby has had a rather mixed bag of sorts when it comes down to his career so far, with the player appearing unable to replicate his performances and form in the Bundesliga whilst in the Premier League.

In his 38 Premier League appearances with Tottenham and Fulham, the attacking midfielder only managed to score two goals and five assists – which are hardly appealing statistics to anybody.

Although things were significantly different for the 29-year-old whilst playing his football in the German Bundesliga with the likes of Schalke 04, VfL Bochum, 1.FSV Mainz and Hamburg over a period of nine years.

Holtby made 200 total appearances in the top-flight, recording 26 goals and 35 assists and helped Schalke win the DFL-Super Cup back in 2011/12 (Transfermarkt).

Gerrard is understood to have been looking for a “quality” addition this season (Football Insider), however, perhaps he was more focused on his pursuit of Claudio Marchisio – Nicolo Schira revealed the former Italy international rejected a contract.

Or, maybe, the Ibrox faithful were worried about Holtby’s injury record, as Transfermarkt note a rather lengthy list of various knocks the former Germany international has suffered throughout his career.

It will be impossible to state whether Holtby would have been a success for Rangers if the Light Blues were to decide to try and sign him, however it appears Gerrard did not feel as though he needed him at Ibrox this season.

Indeed, with a rather congested midfield already with the options available to him, a player of the attacking midfielder’s traits may not have been top of his wishlist and one that he did not particularly want to include in his squad at this present moment of time.
