It’s been a brilliant start to the January transfer window, and that’s exactly what Rangers needed. The Gers have had a decent season so far, but they still remain behind Celtic in the race for the title, and so a few new faces could give Steven Gerrard the boost that he needs.
In Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis, the Gers have landed exactly that – but why stop there?
There are still a few gaps within the squad that need to be addressed, and if Steven Gerrard plugs them, there would be no doubting that the Gers will have made the most of their window and, indeed, gone far beyond how Celtic have done so far.
It’s not a simple task to complete, though. Connor Goldson has done well this season, but other than the former Brighton man, many of the Gers’ defenders have not impressed. Significantly, the likes of Joe Worrall and Nikola Katic have been inconsistent all season long.
So, a new central defender is likely to be on Steven Gerrard’s shopping list, and young Liam Lindsay – currently of Barnsley – could be a good capture.
Rated at £450,000 by Transfer Markt, the defender could represent decent value for money, and given that both of Rangers deals so far have been loan moves, perhaps a permanent transfer should be on the agenda next.
In terms of what he can do, Lindsay is a strong and physical defender that loves to get involved. Whether the ball is in the air or on the floor, the 23-year-old is comfortable – and his first goal is always just to get it clear.
Standing at a whopping 193cm (6ft3), the defender is able to dominate in the air, both defensively and offensively, and that makes him a real threat when facing up against the opposition.
It’s also worth noting his history in Scotland. He is Scottish, and he began his career with Partick Thistle. That’s important, as he’s well aware of the league and what it demands. So, a move for him would come with relatively little risk or concern about any potential adjustment period.
Barnsley wouldn’t want to sell the defender, given his obvious talent, but he could be the man to solve Rangers’ defensive problems.
