Rangers supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s return to Scottish Premiership action on Saturday, with the Gers seeking to stamp their authority on second place when they travel to Motherwell.
It has been a testing few weeks for manager Graeme Murty and his team, what with the Light Blues losing 3-2 at home to Celtic to all but end their slim title chances, and then failing to bounce back in their last league outing after going down 1-0 at home to Kilmarnock. Nonetheless, Rangers remain second in the division ahead of Derek McInnes’ Aberdeen, and they could open up a five-point lead for a few hours at least if they get the better of Stephen Robinson’s Well in the early kick-off on Saturday.
Consequently, there are many excited Gers fans in the Tavern at present, with many hoping that their fine away form this season, in which they have won 11 of their 15 league matches on the road, will continue with victory at Fir Park this weekend.
And many of our resident Rangers supporters have been speculating about the changes Murty may seek to make on Saturday, with several of the opinion that striker Jason Cummings should be axed for Alfredo Morelos.
The Colombian star was replaced by his fellow forward for the clash with Kilmarnock last time out, but Cummings did little to stake a claim for a regular spot in Murty’s team (although he cannot be blamed entirely for their forward struggles).
And with that now seven Scottish Premiership appearances without a goal for the Scotland international, alongside a potentially tiring week on international duty, Murty should seek to reinstate Morelos ahead of the 22-year-old.
Ultimately, the 21-year-old has enjoyed a sensational debut season in Scottish football having netted 17 goals and laid on six assists for the Light Blues this term, including goals and assists in each of his last two Scottish Premiership away games.
And with Murty in need of a victory after two weeks dwelling on the disappointment of the Kilmarnock result, the Colombian ace has the talent and the ability to help lead his side to all three points at Fir Park on Saturday.
It may seem harsh to axe Cummings from the starting line-up after just one game, but the pressure is on Murty to deliver a result, and the 22-year-old simply didn’t do enough against Kilmarnock to warrant another immediate opportunity.
As such, Murty must axe the Scottish youngster in favour of £1.58 million-rated Morelos (as per Transfermarkt) if Rangers are to beat Motherwell on Saturday.
